Information About Specific Crossings

The records of ships used to carry troops to their theaters of operations were destroyed intentionally in 1951. "According to our [U. S. National Archives] records, in 1951 the Department of the Army destroyed all passenger lists, manifests, logs of vessels, and troop movement files of United States Army Transports for World War II." (Sorry, but there was no word on why the records were destroyed.) Thus there is no longer an official record of who sailed on what ship, though there are still valuable sources that can be found. So this web page is an informal collecting ground for information about troop ship crossings.

If you have information about a crossing, please submit your information.

I was a member of the 735th Military Police Bn. We departed 0430 hours 29 Dec 43 from New York on HMT Duchess of Richmond. Our battalion consisted of 27 officers and 713 EM. The ship had approximately 5000 people on board. I do not know any other organizations on the ship. We arrived Liverpool 8 Jan 44, and departed the ship 10 and 11 Jan 44. The battleship TEXAS was in our convoy, and it was a large convoy.

The 735th M.P. Bn. departed Gourock, Scotland on the Queen Mary on 15 June 1945 at 1835 hours enroute to USA, arriving 1500 hours 20 June 45, as a part of 12,326 American troops and 2,200 Navy personnel, and one lone Congressman.

The information above was obtained from my own personal copy of "History of 735th Military Police Bn."

I have spent considerable time trying to find the HMT Duchess of Richmond. We heard the ship was one that was deliberately sunk as a breakwater for the Invasion of Normandy. I have not been able to confirm that.

...I came back to the U. S. aboard the Queen Mary in October 1945, leaving my outfit early account the numbering system and do not know the exact date or name of the ship the remainder of the battalion used coming home.

Here's hoping this may assist you and perhaps some of my buddies. I thank you for your efforts. If, at all possible, I would certainly like to learn if this info can or will be used and incorporated in your good work.

We have reunions each year, now, and I'm still trying to locate some of the men in our battalion - and especially in my battery.

Your question of my coming home Oct. 1945 on the Queen Mary: I, along with three or four other officers of the 244th, due to "points"s, was separated from the 244th in Southampton, England and came back to N. Y. on the "Queen" without being attached to any organization that I remember. I do remember that it was like a "cruise" and that I had no responsibilities whatsoever aboard ship - other than to show up for meals, etc.
